European Union Sector

Representing freelance interpreters in the EU Institutions since 1969

Based on the AIIC-EU Convention, the EU Negotiating Delegation represents all freelance interpreters (known as ACIs, or Auxiliary Conference Interpreters) working for the EU sector. The Negotiating Delegation oversees the implementation of the Convention and maintains for this purpose regular contacts with the Administrations of the EU Institutions.

Main features

  • ACI pay is linked to the pay scale for officials
  • ACIs receive flat-rate travel and compensatory allowances as well as a daily subsistence allowance
  • ACIs benefit from an old age/life provident scheme and are protected by sickness and accident insurance
  • ACI working conditions are covered and protected by the Agreement
  • ACIs working for the EU institutions can attend training courses and language courses and have access to training scholarships

The Negotiating Delegation

  • The voice of the EU sector, negotiates the Agreement with the EU institutions
  • Elected by all ACIs in the EU sector
  • Works with Professional Delegations, delegating tasks to them and addressing any interinstitutional matters they refer to the Negotiating Delegation

The European Parliament Professional Delegation

  • Defends and promotes the interests of ACIs working for the European Parliament (EP)
  • Monitors the correct implementation of the AIIC-EU Agreement
  • Holds regular meetings with the EP’s DG for Logistics and Interpretation (DG LINC)
  • Manages the EP Professional Delegation communication platform for ACIs
  • Helps ACIs resolve individual problems (payments, travel, assignments)
  • Maintains close contact with the Staff Interpreters Delegation (DELINT)

The European Commission Professional Delegation

  • Monitors the Directorate-General for Interpretation’s (DG SCIC) compliance with the provisions of the AIIC-EU Agreement
  • Refers interinstitutional matters to the Negotiating Delegation
  • Helps ACIs working for SCIC – AIIC members and non-members alike – to address individual concerns related to working conditions, reimbursement of expenses and working time
  • Meets with DG SCIC to discuss matters related to the application of the Agreement

The Negotiating Delegation is elected by all ACIs or freelance interpreters in the EU sector at a sectoral meeting. The AIIC-EU Convention applies to ALL freelance interpreters working for the EU institutions, AIIC members and non-members alike.

The AIIC EU Negotiating Delegation works with the Professional Delegations of the European Parliament and the European Commission to negotiate and defend the terms and conditions of all ACIs working for the European Parliament, the European Commission, the Council of the EU and the Court of Justice of the EU.

It is the sole interlocutor in the interinstitutional social dialogue.
