AIIC UK & Ireland News
AIIC UK & Ireland organised three online Q&A sessions with members of AIIC's Taskforce on Distance Interpreting (TFDI).

Andrew Constable, coordinator of the Taskforce, presented the different forms of Distance Interpreting (DI), as well as AIIC's latest recommendations and guidelines. He focused on the impact of the additional cognitive effort involved in DI on meeting duration and team strength; the importance of safeguarding interpreters’ health and wellbeing, whether interpretation is provided in situ or remotely; and the fact that conference interpreting is a team effort. Interpreting from home is regarded as a solution being offered in extremis.

Bettina Ludewig-Quaine, coordinator of the AIIC Coordinated Organisations Negotiating Delegation, is involved in negotiating working conditions for remote interpreting with the Council of Europe. Bettina talked about how the Council of Europe had reacted to the COVID crisis, gave her predictions for future developments in the interpreting profession and explained what role she believes AIIC should play. AIIC has taken the lead in providing information and guidance, which prioritises the health and safety of interpreters. AIIC members are also contributing to the development of standards within ISO working groups, adding their voices to those of the other major players in the industry.

Haris Ghinos set up the first interpreter-owned hub in Europe (in Athens). He is currently responsible for drafting the forthcoming ISO 23155 on conference interpreting. During the online session organised by AIIC UK & Ireland, he spoke about ISO, hubs and how he sees the future of interpreting in the context of the current crisis.
