AIIC Interpreters

AIIC interpreters include freelance professionals, staffers, business owners and academics. Based in 106 countries, they all share the same high professional standards.

Why join us?

Here are just some of the reasons members give for joining the International Association of Conference Interpreters.

1.  Sharing AIIC values

AIIC was founded to define and promote high standards in conference interpreting. When you decide to join AIIC, you will need sponsors who have worked with you and know that you meet those standards. In this way, our values are maintained and passed to future generations of conference interpreters, whatever challenges and changes we might face.

2.  Solidarity with colleagues

AIIC is a global community with shared values and beliefs. We stand together with our colleagues in good times and in bad. When they are affected by unexpected events that impact them personally, as well as professionally, AIIC is there to support them. For the past 60 years, AIIC has maintained a solidarity fund that provides interest-free loans to any member in difficulty who requests assistance.

3.  Building a regional AIIC presence

When there are more than 25 AIIC members in a particular part of the world, they may apply to become a region with its own budget and seat on the Advisory Board. Currently there are 23 regions that plan local events, maintain contacts with local associations and institutions and lobby for the interests of their members.

4.  Professional development and training opportunities

Whether it's about adding new languages, learning about niche industries or updating our technology skills, conference interpreters are knowledge-hungry by nature. AIIC has a dedicated Training and Professional Development group that organises specialist professional development and Training of Trainer workshops throughout the year. AIIC members enjoy priority booking and member discounts at all these events.

AIIC regions also organise training opportunities to cater for their members' needs, and often team up with other regions that share similar interests. In recent years, regions have offered training on soft skills to help their freelance members in running their businesses, and language workshops for interpreters who are reclassifying their languages or adding new ones.

5.  Ensuring the right working conditions for conference interpreters

AIIC members take an active role in promoting safe and fair working conditions for conference interpreters. From negotiating with institutions to educating interpreters and clients about the latest health and technology research or working with national standardisation bodies on upcoming ISO standards, AIIC members are defining how our profession will be practised in the coming decades.

6.  International networking opportunities

AIIC is the only global association of conference interpreters, giving its members unique opportunities to meet conference interpreters in their region and around the world. We regularly get together online and in-person for professional and social events.

7.  Being listed in the AIIC Directory

The AIIC directory is used by institutions and event organisers to ensure they choose experienced professionals for their meetings and events. Every active member of AIIC is listed in the directory, which can be searched by location and language combination.
