How AIIC Works

Governance

The original members elected a 9-person Council to oversee the Association. The Council would later evolve into the Executive Committee, elected by each Assembly to run the Association between its 3-yearly meetings.

The Assembly also elects the Budget Committee, the Committee on Admissions and Language Classification and the Disciplinary and Disputes Committee.

An Advisory Board, made up of representatives from AIIC’s groups and regions, supports the Executive Committee in its work.

The regions

While the International Association of Conference Interpreters was always intended to be a global association, from the 1980s regions were created to represent members locally. Today there are 23 regions, each with at least 25 members. Some regions represent single countries, while others comprise groups of countries.

The Negotiating Delegations

The representation of our members’ interests includes a long history of members negotiating agreements with institutions for the benefit of our colleagues.

AIIC currently has agreements with the United Nations, European Union, Global Union Federations, World Customs Organisation and a Co-ordinated Organisations agreement with the European Space Agency (ESA), the Council of Europe (CE) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). Each agreement covers working conditions and remuneration for all freelance conference interpreters working for that particular institution.
