Institutional Market
International institutions are an important market for interpreters, both freelancers and full-time employees alike
AIIC has institutional agreements with key international bodies, including the United Nations, the European Union institutions and the Coordinated Organisations (the European Space Agency, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation [NATO] and the Council of Europe). These agreements or conventions govern the pay and working conditions of all freelance interpreters, not just members of AIIC.
AIIC also counts many staff interpreters — those employed full-time by the institutions — amongst its members.
While numerous AIIC interpreters work exclusively for institutional clients, there are many who move freely between the institutional and private market sectors.
